Did you know that in China giving a clock as a gift wrapped in white paper would be seen as wishing ill?  Both clocks and white denote death in their culture.  Are you going to Japan? If you receive a gift in Japan, don't open it upon receiving it. That would be impolite.

What might be perfectly acceptable in one country might be totally taboo in another.  In order to succeed in business dealings in Asia or with people born and raised in Asia, one must be able to communicate with people well and know their values and cultures.

About our guest speaker: Sonia Garza-Monarchi brings more than 20 years of experience in international protocol, diplomacy and event management. Immediately prior to launching her consulting firm, Ms. Garza-Monarchi was vice president and general manager of the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau (GHCVB).  As executive director of the Houston International Protocol Alliance, a division of the GHCVB, Ms. Garza-Monarchi was also the city's chief protocol officer.  She is the immediate past president of Protocol & Diplomacy International- Protocol Officers Association, a national association of protocol officers.
